Police operatives in Ogun State have arrested a 40-year-old man, Olanrewaju Bamidele, for allegedly stabbing his wife, Adenike Olanrewaju, to death with a screw driver.
It was gathered that Olanrewaju had a misunderstanding with his wife at their home at Bisodun village in Ofada, Ogun State, which resulted in a fight, but the woman fell and slipped into a coma after being hit with stick repeatedly.
The son, Ayomide Olanrewaju, 15, who witnessed the fight, told the police that his father allegedly used a screw driver to stab his mother while she was in a coma.
Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement said Olanrewaju was arrested by a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Akinfolahan Oluseye following a complaint by the suspect’s son, who reported the incident at the Ofada Police Station.
Oyeyemi said the villagers assisted the police in apprehending the suspect by holding him down until detectives arrived and took him to Owode-Egba Divisional Police Headquarters.
The spokesman alleged that investigation showed that the suspect was fond of beating his wife, adding that after killing her, he attempted to bury her secretly, but the deceased children, who saw him digging a grave by the side of his house, alerted their neighbours, who rushed to the scene and held the suspect, waiting for the police to arrive.
The Nation reports that her remains have been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue, Sagamu, for autopsy, while the screw driver and stick used to allegedly kill the woman have been recovered.
Police Commissioner Kenneth Ebrimson has directed that the suspect be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) further investigation and prosecution.
