Osun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Adebayo Adeleke has stated that the non-custodial option in the punishment of offenders would not only decongest prisons, but also reduce the cost of care of convicts after conviction.
He stated this while receiving the team in charge of the Non-custodial measure of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Osun State Command on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the ministry.
The commissioner was reacting to the request of the Officer in charge of the Non-custodial measure, DCC Ayobami Adelakun for office accommodation in all the local governments to kick-start the programme.
Adelakun said, the option would decongest the prison, generate revenue for the government and reduce the rate at which offenders venture into crime.
While responding, the Commissioner said that the Non-custodial measure is long overdue, as it would bring dignity to the society.
Prince Adeleke was optimistic that it would not be too much for each of the local governments to provide offices for the service to kick-start the programme.
He assure that the Governor, Gboyega Oyetola would be briefed on the request, while all the local government chairmen would be invited for proper enlightenment by the officials of the service.
Also speaking, Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Evangelist Rasak Adeosun said, the governor would be happy to be part of the success of the measure, particularly now that it is domiciled in the Ministry of Interior headed by the immediate past Governor of the state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
He stressed that the Non-custodial measure is the way to go to correct the levels of criminality in the society.
